Chapter 6

James Cottrell

“I don’t want another book. I don’t want to look out the window. I don’t even want a new playlist. I want to be out of confinement.” James hadn’t meant to raise his voice, but frustration made each sentence a little stronger than the last.

May stood extending her phone and solar charger toward him.

“Okay, I do want the playlist,” he said, taking the phone and solar charger from her. James had been feeling well for several days, but they wouldn’t allow him to leave his bedroom—only four walls. It was killing him. “When can I leave? How long is the quarantine?”

“The requirement is two days past the last time you had a fever,” May said patiently.

“That was two days ago,” said James.

“Correct. I was coming up to tell you. Your quarantine is up tonight. Just in time to go to the musicale if you would like,” she said with a grin on her face.

“You could have led with that. Yes, I would like. Could you please ask Nellie to send Timothy to my room? I’ll need some formal clothing.”

“I can do that. Let me finish charting your vitals. Mother will have my head if I don’t keep up my skills.” She grabbed a notepad from the shelf.

James extended his arm for her to take his pulse, breathing rate, and blood pressure. “Is Isabel enjoying herself?” he asked, his voice barely louder than a whisper. James’s eyes connected with May’s and she just blinked at him. Did she really not know what he was asking?

“Isabel is trying to get her feet under her. It’s been a huge change to move to a different country as well as a different time. She doesn’t speak the language nor does she know the customs.”

James ached to be able to help her. That night’s musicale was the last thing that Nellie arranged for her full-moon house party that month. He was glad to attend even that much.

It was as if May could read his mind when she added, “June and Isabel have become fast friends. They truly are good for each other. June helps Isabel learn while Isabel calms June down.”

“Of course. You’re right. It sounds perfect for both of them.” And where did that leave him? With one dance per evening to avoid any suspicion of his true feelings.

“She asks about you every day.” May pulled his record off the dresser, tucking it in her bag. “She tries to guard her expression, but I know Isabel has real concern.” Then May gathered up the pulse-ox and stethoscope and placed them in her bag as well. “She feels responsible for bringing the Plague on you.” James was shaking his head when May added, “She’ll see you are well and then she will be able to get on with her life. She should experience more than a young woman normally does to compensate for the tragedies she had in France.”

James was quiet as he contemplated his next steps.

May closed her bag and picked it up, looking like the old-fashioned doctor on TV shows.
